The Northport Boys and Girls Track teams heavily sprinkled leaderboards at the Section XI Championships on Tuesday.

The boys place second overall and the girls fourth – and combining these two together, makes for the best overall school performance. North Babylon, whose girls team finished first overall and boys team finished sixth would be next.

Host Connetquot’s boys team was first overall with a whopping 142.5 points.

James McNaughton and Sam Gibbons

Some Highlights:

The Wickard Sisters, Mia, Emily and Finnley took First, second and fourth respectively in the 3000M, all of whom bested 11 minutes. Sticking her nose in the way of a clean Northport medal sweep was Alejandra Garcia of West Babylon. These were the only four runners to break 11 minutes.

Speaking of sweeps, Wyeth Semo, Brandon Cruz, and Brandon Meiner all broke ten minutes in the 3200M race and swept the podium.  This performance racked up 24 points for the boys team.

Erik Holden took gold in the Pentathlon with 607 points. The Tribune will research how that score was amassed, but assumes that Holden was golden in all 5 events. Logan Monaco checked in with a 6th place finish.

Chase Hendrickson earned a red check mark for Top 25 in the State in the 400M dash and finished just under 50 seconds at 49.98. He and Julio Martinez were the only two runners to do so. Hendrickson earned a State Top 50 in the 200M as well.

Karen Stehlik was fourth in the girls 800M. Cate Coronato, Courtney Coronato, Anne Mara Payton Conner, and Isa Silfa-Castro were all in the Top 20. Cate ran a personal best at 2:36.71

Wyeth Semo placed silver in the boys 800M with a time of 2:03.61

Three Tigers Girls finished in the Top Ten in the 1500M run. Mia and Emily Wickard and Kaylee Ryan

The Boys 1600M leaderboard is essentially a Tiger den. Timothy Sheahan, James McNaughton, Sam Gibbons and Chris Payne all finished in the Top 5. Sheahan edged out Aidan Nielson of Deer Park at the finish line to take gold.

Steeplechase is not an event that a Track and Field aficionado would see at every meet.  Northport seldom run in it. That did not stop Katie Hayes and Finnley Wickard from finishing one and two in the 2000M. Ascending hurdles and splashing in water hazards did not deter this duo from not only winning, but earning the beloved State Top 25 badge of honor. Hayes’s performance earned Top 25 in USA and Wickard’s, Top 50. They both are relatively new to this race.

“Katie did it twice last year and Finnley did for the first time a few days ago, said girls Distance coach Gregg Cantwell. “I was hoping Finnley would like it because she’s athletic and has very good endurance. They are both really good at steeplechase.

For those Tribune readers that are uninitiated, the Steeplechase is a long, multi-lap run where the competitors have to climb wall hurdles and jump into water pits. It originated in Ireland in the 1700’s and at that time was run by horses.

Timothy Sheahan, coming off his 1600M win also bagged first in the boys 3000M steeplechase. Jackson Arthur was a top 10 finisher as well.

The girls 4x800M relay team won gold. Emily Wickard, Karen Stehlik, Katie Hayes and Finnley Wickard took the honors at 10:03.13

In the same race for the Boys team, Sam Gibbons, Brandon Meiner, Aidan Loughlin, and Chris Payne took third with a time of 8:45.77.

In the throwing and jumping, the highlight is Mason Hecht and his 137 foot discus throw. That was the best throw of the meet by a full six feet.

“It was awesome,” said his throwing coach Nick Gueits. “It was the first time I’ve had a sophomore win Counties.”

Thomas Acosta hit the 10 foot mark in pole vault for a new personal best.  This made the top 10.

A contingent of Tiger athlete will compete at the Blazing relays today (Friday May 27) and State Qualifiers are next week June 2 and 3.
