Track 'em

Northport Boys and Girls Spring Track kicks off this week

Story by Steven Zaitz with contributions from Coach Cantwell

It is hard to keep up with both the girls and boys Tiger Track and Field teams.

Not only because they run really fast, but they are breaking records and collecting medals at a pace never really seen before at Northport High School.

Boys Spring Track

Over the past three months, they have accomplished the following:

  • 3rd place in the Millrose Games 4×800 – Mia Wickard-Emily Wickard-Allison Reid-Katie Hayes
  • 3rd place at the league championships as a team. Highest in 10 years.  Allison Reid League champ in the 1000. Mia Wickard League Champion in the 3000.  Emily Wickard League Champ in the 1500.
  • Large School County Team Champions. Third time ever.  First time in 10+ years.  Allison Reid County Champ in the 1000 and 1500.  Mia Wickard County Champ in 3000, Finnley Wickard 2nd.  Allison Reid, Emily Wickard, Katie Hayes 1-2-3 in the 1500.  Mia Wickard, Finnley Wickard, Emily Wickard, Katie Hayes were 4×8 County Champions.
  • Olivia Jaworski broke her own 300m school record and became the first Northport girl to run under 43 seconds when she ran 42.90.
  • Allison Reid is Sectional Champion in the 3000. Mia Wickard State Qualifier in the 3000. Olivia Jaworski State Qualifier in the 300-meter dash.  Mia Wickard, Allison Reid, Emily Wickard and Katie Hayes were sectional 4 x 800 Champions.  Six State Qualifiers
  • Mia Wickard set the New York State 7th Grade record for the 3000m. She ran the fastest 3000-meter race ever run by any 7th grader in the history of NY when she got 8th place at the state meet and got All State honors and she set the Northport School Record as well from 2004.  The 4×8 of Katie Hayes, Emily Wickard, Finnley Wickard, and Karen Stehlik got 8th place in the 4×8 and were all state.  Karen and Finnley were subs and did not know they were running until the days right before the state meet.  An injury and scheduling conflict required the two subs to step in and to get All State without Mia and Allison was amazing.
  • At Nationals, Mia Wickard set the New York State 7th grade record again for the 2-mile run. She ran 2 miles in 10:55 on the first day of Nationals.  The second day of Nationals, Mia Wickard (5:12), Finnley Wickard (5:21), Emily Wickard (5:10), and Katie Hayes (5:20) captured Northport’s first All American honors since 2010 Outdoor Track with their 5th place finish at New Balance Nationals.
  • Olivia Jawaorski joined three girls from other schools and ran personal best in the Intersectional relay race at States. The intersectional relay is made of athletes from four different teams in Section XI, who come together the run the Intersectional Relay at the State meet. The relay consists of 1000m, 200m, 600m and 1600m. Olivia’s leg is the 200m
  • “Winning States was a dream come true,” said Jaworski. “I give the other three girls a lot of credit because they helped me get to that point. But I went out there and ran a personal best. That’s what I was expecting to do and somehow, we won States. It was mind-boggling.”
  • Allison Reed is the Suffolk County Outstanding Runner of the Year

Got all that?

  • As for the boys, The Distance Medley Team of Wyeth Semo, Chase Hendrickson, Tim Sheahan and James McNaughton won the Nike Indoor National meet with a time of 10:30.32
  • The Boys 4 x 800 team consisting of Wyeth Semo, Brandon Cruz, Tim Sheahan and James McNaughton earned All-State Federation honors at NYSPHSAA meet on Staten Island.
  • Wyeth Semo who ran a seasonal best to finish 4th in NY public schools and 7th in the Federation.
  • Chase Hendrickson’s Intersectional Relay team finished in 2nd place at the New York State Championship for Section XI. He ran the 200m portion of the race.

Add all of this to the success of both team in the fall Cross Country season and the squads are looking to continue the winning in Spring Track. The boys are coached by Jason Strom, the girls by Greg Cantwell, Nick Gueits handles the throwers and Beth Zebuth is the Track and Field Program Coordinator. The teams will go back to dual meets where they will compete one on one with other schools in their league during the week. They will also participate in invitation meets throughout the spring and will leverage these to shoot for person records and county and state qualifications.

Both teams open up against Smithtown East on Thursday. The boys at home and the girls travel to St. James.

“Winning the League Title this year in Spring Track would be cool,” said Cantwell of the girls team. “Northport hasn’t done that in a really long time. I think we have a shot at. Connetquot has a very good team and Huntington has a really good sprint group, but we should win a few dual meets.”

“Throwers are looking to dominate the division in discus this year,” said Gueits. “Junior Ethan Makaw and Senior Kelly Kropp are going to have really great seasons.”
