Top 30 Tiger Photos 2022-23
The judges have spoken and as a group, have decided to expand the Top Photo List to 30 for the first half of this school year. I wish all Tribune subscribers a happy and healthy new year and all of the Northport Athletic family as well.
As you long-timers know, the Tribune Photo Desk likes sideline portraits as well as action and this list has a mix of both. We also try to pick solely on the photographic quality and significance of each shot and nothing more.
Thank you for you loyal support and we hope you enjoy the list.
#30 – Faces, in most cases, must be prominent in a Top 30 quality photo. In this shot we have the struggling face of of a Hills East defender, flying dreads of another guy and a lot of rubber pellets. Plus Michael Raio scoring a touchdown. A good combination – photo by Steve Zaitz
#29 – This game was death struggle to reach the Suffolk Final that SmW won in penalty kicks. It also featured a lot of hard hitting headers and physical play. we could have used 1 of 10 photos from this game. Ricky Corbett gets the nod here – photo by Steve Zaitz
#28 – Autumn Colors and smiling Lady Tiger faces – photo by Steve Zaitz
#27 – Field Hockey is a sport where it is tough to actually get the goal scorer and the goal at the same time in a photo so the Tribune photographers are always experimenting with positioning. Although we have said faces are important in our pictures, in this case we don’t need a face to know who this is – the great Olivia McKenna – photo by Steve Zaitz
#26 – There are a few things the Tribune shutterbugs avoid like the plague from photo backgrounds. Gray Garbage Cans, School Buses and Port o Potties (hello baseball team). Exit Signs in gyms are another avoidable object that we try to keep out of our photos, but in this case, the light from the exit sign worked to our advantage- photo by Steve Zaitz
#25 – Tigerettes in black and white – photo by Steve Zaitz
#24 – JoJo Cipollino has become a favorite target of Tribune lensmen. Here is one reason why – photo by Steve Zaitz
#23 – There is always something going on the Tiger Football Sideline and we could have a Top 20 just for that. We go with Giancarlo Valenti’s mouthguard here – photo by Steve Zaitz
#22 – Golf is difficult to shoot for the uninitiated. The photographer must be respectful to the players and the traditions of the game – Casey Triolo and Indian Hills – photo by Steve Zaitz
#21 – A momentus occasion when All world Goalie Natalie McKenna came out of the net and had a bunch of shots on goal vs rival Commack. btw the Lady Tigers haven’t lost since the Clinton Administration- photo by Steven Zaitz
#20 – Volleyball is always tricky, as the shots almost always look the same. This one of Tomi Sandin does not – photo by S. Zaitz
#19 – The cheerleading competitions are extremely challenging. Yes for the girls of course who are doing a fantastic job this year qualifying for stuff, but also for the Tribune photo staff. They are on stage for only 2 or 3 minutes and there is not a lens that we have found to be ideal for this type of shooting. Brook Wenger goes airborne – photo by S. Zaitz
#18 – Try as they might, the Tribune photographers have not been able to get to a track meet yet, but was able to catch up with the seniors at the start of the school year – photo by S. Zaitz
#17 – The Marching Band is world famous and worked overtime this year as the Football team made it to County Final. The Brass and autumnal tree line (along with lightroom effects) make for a nice palette – photo by S. Zaitz
